"There are many layers to the sentiment of, ‘Less house, More life,’ but the one that strikes closest to home is that it amounts not to a trade-off, but a trade-up: You trade away the things you thought made a home—stuff that takes up space but maybe doesn’t really contribute much to your quality of life. In exchange, you fill that space with exactly what you need to make your tiny place, a tiny home. And with plenty of room left over for your life to grow in other ways. It’s winter here while I write this; at first, I thought I might not like the coziness of a tiny space. But a few steps away, I can let the outdoors in. Do I miss the bustle of traffic? Not in the least, the snow rushing across the nearby pond suits me just fine. And when it’s dark, it’s not streetlights I fall asleep to, but a canopy of stars I can see for once. Less square footage was exactly what I needed to figure out what the footprint of my life is likely to be going forward. This house might be tiny, but it’s a lot of home."
